In recent years we have seen how remote work has been increasing over the last decade when it started as a niche practice to a world extended one but it has seen its pick during the period of the covid-19 pandemic, making remote work a practical solution for work, productivity, connectivity and time problems, it has brought some great insights inincreasing productivity of workers but it has also brought some new challenges that we will explore further in this article.
Remote work has come to our lives to stay and to be interrelated with in office work, as the union of this two would generate
higher productivity and balanced work-life, while gathering information from articles it’s clear that remote work brings amazing benefits for both companies and also workers, such benefits includes higher Flexibility, reduce distractions at the office, Reduced Commute Times by reducing unnecessary meetings prioritizing time and reducing stress, increased periods of concentration and efficiency, the opportunity to gather and find the best talent around the world. As Adam Ozimek found in his
article “One third of hiring managers found that productivity had increased as a result of remote work, a greater share than found productivity decreased” we can see the results as an increase in productivity compared to the decrease shown in some cases resulting with a net increase.
Besides that, remote work has also brought some challenges that workers will face during the lifetime working some of them are technological issues as sometimes workers don’t have the right technological tools at home but this should be prevented over time, distractions at home as people might easily get distracted or try to multitask with home tasks, reduce of team cohesion and a bigger problem that relates to the connectivity paradox as digital devices advance, people feel more disconnected from work and each other than ever before.
Therefore, Remote work offers great insights in the increase of productivity while using different advantages as flexibility and time management brings, we can’t leave the challenges behind as we will need to work on them in order to fully maximize productivity and life-balance of workers, generally remote work makes the net of productivity higher than without it but I believe a mix of both remote and in office work would be the perfect mix for a fully productive work environment.
